[YDD] 1200+ free track maps (with driving advice)

1,200+ free track maps
(with turn-by-turn guidance)

Hello Reader,

Traditional track maps are great, but they only show you the corners.

What you really want to know is how you should drive each one:

  • For turn 2, should you apex early or late?
  • At turn 5, when should you be aiming to get back on the power?
  • Where should you position the car to be fastest through the turn 7, 8 and 9 sweepers?
  • etc. etc.

Which approach is fastest?

It's not that you can't drive fast.
It's that the fastest option isn't always obvious.

Hopefully, this week's “article” gives you a few new ideas.

Quick backstory...

As you may know, I've been building Lap Time Finder, a tool to automagically analyse your data.

Part of that has involved building a lap simulator.

To test the sim, I let it drive millions of laps across 1,200+ tracks.

Today... I'm (tentatively!) giving you access to what it did.

Gulp!

It's wrong (but hopefully still useful!)

The lines and guidance it gives you are A SUGGESTION.

Your car is different, the track is idealised, the driver is really (really) good... (and several other caveats below!)

So, don't treat what this says as "right" or "wrong".

Treat the lines and guidance as a talking point.
A starting point for a track you've never driven.
Or, an opinionated alternative, to compare with what you already do.

p.p.s. Track Map Notes and Caveats...

  • The guide uses Lap Time Finder under the hood, driving either a Miata or a 125cc kart. Your car will be different.
  • Apex points. The sim drove 5,000 to 10,000 laps per track. (Yes, even the 'Ring. It took hours!) Sometimes it settled on an unusual apex to gain 0.02 sec. Use it to get you thinking and experimenting, not as the definitive line.
  • The track is idealised for a dry day. Grip is the same everywhere. No real camber. No real bumps. No kerbs.
  • Where I couldn't find sources, I've estimated track width, start lines, corner names and numbers, even direction and layouts. I've caught plenty of mistakes, but there will still be errors...
  • The tracks DO have hills. But that comes from GPS data, and sometimes I've had to filter out spikes caused by overhanging trees or bridges. I've done the best I can.
  • Big mistakes. If anything looks way off, let me know. I mean missing corners, silly lines, wrong direction, that kind of thing. Not local knowledge... That's yours to share when you pass the maps on!

p.p.p.s. Personalised advice...

In Lap Time Finder, I replace the generic car with your car.
More on THAT coming soon...

Should you ever test on old tyres?

This week: Testing on old tyres – Worth it or waste of time? Hello Reader, You might hear people in the paddock declare that testing on old tyres is a complete waste of time. But is it? This might be fine for them but what if you don't have an unlimited budget for tyres, care somewhat for the environment and/or find yourself restricted by series regulation? You know that new tyres will give you more grip and that they will perform differently. But will the information gathered on old tyres be...

Ahead of the Curve This week: Understeer defined | Master Your Tyres update "ed" Two letters that I hope will change your relationship with understeer and oversteer for ever. As you well know Reader, these at two terms that get used with abandon in the paddock. Everyone has a strong view on what they mean. My concern, is that not everyone has the same view! Firstly, I totally acknowledge the simple versions that include seeing trees (or not!) and expletives (describing the front or back of...
